Coach and Girl Team Members Win Big Nine Soccer Team Honors
Grand
Blanc’s varsity girl’s coach has been named the Big Nine Soccer Coach of the
year. Jill Kehler, Coach Kehler’s
daughter, was named All-Big Nine Conference first team and the league’s Most
Valuable Player as a sophomore.
Congratulations
are also in order for senior Amanda Reynolds and sophomore and Paige Goldman who
were named to the All – Big Nine Conference first team. Junior Caitlin
Clifford and sophomore Sophia Naum were named All – Big Nine Conference Second
Team while Samantha Duberg, Jill Gookin, Ashley Zink, Bridgette Keener, Alaina
Simoni, Katie Agnoni, and Allie Gerlach received honorable mention.
According
to the Flint Journal, Jill Kehler has matched two of her sister Alyson's more
noteworthy accomplishments at Grand Blanc High, making the All-Big Nine
Conference first team in soccer as a freshman and sophomore and being named
league Most Valuable Player as a sophomore.
Until
this year, the only players to make the All – Big Nine first team as 9th
and 10th graders were Alyson Kehler and Swartz Creek's Haley Henry,
both in 1997 and 1998. Alyson Kehler was the only Big Nine sophomore to win the
MVP award, sharing it with junior teammate Amy Allen in 1998.
Jill Kehler was second in the Big Nine with 10 goals and tied for first
with 10 assists. Overall, she had 13 goals and 18 assists.
Grand
Blanc's future appears to be bright, because another sophomore made the first
team and another made the second team. Paige Goldman moved up to the first team
after making the second team as a freshman, while Sophia Naum was chosen to the
second team after earning first-team honors last year.
Goldman
had six goals and four assists in the league, 11 goals and eight assists
overall.
"She
has a great shot and a great finish, one of the better ones we have,"
Kehler said. "She's very versatile, as well. I played her and Jill up top
because they work off each other so well, but I could play her in the middle or
back if I had to."
The
only senior among Grand Blanc's five first- and second-team picks is defender
Amanda Reynolds. She had two goals and two assists in the league, three goals
and four assists overall.
"She's real smooth and confident back there," Kehler said. "She's probably one of the best players under pressure as far as composure goes that I've had."
